I’ve noticed that Canon offers this new feature called “Auto Lighting Optimizer” (ALO) on the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 50D SLRs.    ALO reportedly optimizes images by automatically adjusting contrast and brightness, maintaining highlight details.

It’s available in full auto and Creative Auto Shooting modes but has options to be fine-tuned in other modes, plus if you are shooting in RAW, it can be applied later with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software (free with every EOS camera).
