Canon has quietly introduced a new version II of their very popular EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS zoom lens!  Its predecessor is truly an outstanding lens, and with the introduction of this new version, Canon is sure to catch the attention of serious photographers.

Canon claims to have increased the speed, performance and optical quality of  this already-great lens.  They have added a new “next-generation Optical Image Stabilizer” allowing you to shoot at shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower (a 1 stop improvement over the previous model).  Just imagine the possibilities, especially if you pair this amazing 2.8 lens with 4 stop image stabilization with the new Canon EOS 1D Mark IV with a max ISO of 102,400!  That means hand-held telephoto shots in even very dark conditions!

Canon has also redesigned the internal optics to minimize secondary chromatic aberrations and improve contrast and resolution.   The minimum focusing distance has also been reduced to 3.9 feet (from 4.6 feet in the previous model).

This lens is not yet in the stores, but here’s more information on Canon’s website:
